What are the IP ratings | waterproof and dustproof resistance? | Explained

When we buy any electronic appliances , gadgets , phone , watch , or any device we noticed one thing at the back of the box written IP67 or IP68. Whats does that shows you.Thats nothing but the protection ratings. So today I going to talk what are IP ratings

The full name of IP is Ingress Protection. It basically shows you that at what rate or level your device can protect against solid or liquid also how much time it can protect against solid and liquid. These ratings are used to define the level of sealing effectiveness of electrical enclosure instrusion against foreign bodies like dust , moisture , water.  The IP code gives you more accurate details about the protection of the device rather than the marketing terms such as "waterproof". Lets see how

The IP code consists the letter IP and at the side you will find two numbers written like IP22 , IP67 or whatever. But these numbers are different, meaning that every individual number shows different protection of the product. For example a phone is certified IP67  so the 6 will represent the protection against solid like dust , dirt and the 7 will represent the protection against liquid like moisture , water etc.

The IP ratings are categorised into different ratings which tells the protection. The starting solid protection number starts with 0 meaning no protection , 1 means the protection against solid which is more than 5cm , 2 means protection against solid which is more than 12.5mm. Now when we go down till rating 5 it means that the device is dust resistance it can resist dust at some level , and 6 means it's totally dustproof , no dust can go inside it. Similar the second number which is the liquid protection number starts from 0 meaning no protection from liquid , if we go down it will tell the protection against liquid at an angle , protection against splash , protection against drops. Now when we see the water rating at 7 or 8 it tells you the protection against immertion in water so the 7th rating tells you that it can protect the internal parts of the device in immersed condition from 15cm to 1m atleast till 30 minutes and 8 rating tells you protection against the internal parts of the device in immersed condition for long time under pressure.

So when you look at the IP rating of the phone written IP67 it means that the phone is fully dustproof and can protect the internal parts even when it is immersed in water from 15cm to 1m for 30 minutes.  And IP68 means it can protect from dust as well as when immersed in water for long periods. Now mostly phones are IP67 or IP68 that good thing but you have to follow the protection level according to the ratings if you go beyond then your device might get damage or will not work so it's better to follow the IP ratings. I hope you understand about the IP ratings and that's important yeah. So see you soon and good bie
