This happens by 2 reasons , while your charging your phone the current flows in the phone rapidly like fast charging and also it gets hot because it discharge rapidly like if your playing games the current discharge rapidly and fast from the battery , so when the current flows in mental the charged particles and the ions collide each other and the energy comes in the form of heat. Like while your playing a high graphic game the processing unit has to work much and so it takes more current and because of this your phone becomes hot. Metal case are better than plastic because metals allows to pass heat and can make your mobile at constant temperature. But metals makes the phone heavy that's why no one use it.
