How does motor works
Now days motors are used in many places and appliances like fan , car , your KTM Duke (bike) , washing machine , mixer , computer s and many many more. But do you know how it works???
To understand this you need to understand the physics laws. Now the law related to motor is the Fleming's left hand rule which state that if we stretch the thumb, the fore finger , and the center fingure
perpendicular to each other, the center finger point in the direction of current, the fore fingure points in direction of magnetic field then the thumb will point towards the direction of force. Well this is basically to check in which direction the force is applied.
So the Principle in which motor works is based on magnetic field of electric currrnt , a current carring coil is placed in magnetic field which applies a force on current carrying coil which start to rotate and the direction of the coil is determined by Fleming's left hand rule.
So now you have understand so far we will see now what a motor contains. A simple motor contains a permanent horseshoe magnet and a rectangular coil kept between them , the two end of the coil are slightly bended and attached to commutator it is attached because it changes the direction of current after evey half rotation so that it rotates in same direction. Two carbon brushes are joined to the commutator this is because to make contact between commutator and the terminal battery so that it can tapped out current.
As you can see in the picture when current flow through coil, arm AB and CD it experience magnetic force.
So if we apply Fleming's left hand rule on arm AB it experience a force which is in downwards direction and the arm CD experience upwards direction. These forces are equal and opposite because of this force it constitute a couple. Now the coil rotates and rotates and reach vertical position. At this position the contact of the commutator breaks down because when it reaches vertical position the gaps of the commutator are occupied by the carbon brushes so the supply of the current is cut off.But is doesn't mean the coil has stop rotating the coil already gains it's momentum
so it continues to rotate.
Now when the commutator comes it's contact with the brush after rotation the direction of the current is reversed in arm AD and CD also the position of the arm is replace like AB➡️CD and CD➡️AB.The force acting on arm CD is in downward direction and force acting on arm AB is in upward direction. These 2 equal and opposite forces constitute a couple.this couple rotate coil again in clockwise direction
This is all about how motor runs and yea motors are used in conducting electricity one of the motor used mostly is dc current where it converts mechanical energy into electrical energy.
